Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about our services and road travel in Austria and Germany.

General & Service Questions

What exactly does HighwayInfo Hub provide?

HighwayInfo Hub is an online information and coordination desk. We provide structured, factual information about road networks, toll systems, driving regulations and route planning for Austria and Germany. We do not provide emergency services, real-time data or physical assistance.

Is this service free?

Most of our published content is free to access. For specific coordination enquiries that require research beyond our published material, a fee may apply. We always confirm costs by email before proceeding.

Do I need a vignette to drive on Austrian motorways?

Yes. All motorways and expressways in Austria require a valid digital vignette. As of 2024, vignettes are digital only and registered to your vehicle's number plate. They are available from ASFINAG online, at border crossings and at petrol stations. Note: some routes (Brenner, Tauern, Arlberg) require additional separate tolls.

Are there speed limits on German motorways?

Germany does not have a general speed limit on Autobahns, but a recommended speed of 130 km/h applies. Many sections have variable or permanent speed limits displayed on overhead signs. Urban areas are 50 km/h and rural roads 100 km/h as standard.

When are winter tyres required in Austria?

Austria has a situational winter tyre requirement, not a fixed date-based one. If road conditions are wintry — snow, ice or slush — winter tyres are legally required. In practice, this applies from approximately November to April. Minimum tread depth is 4 mm.

What is the emergency corridor rule?

When traffic comes to a complete standstill on a multi-lane road, drivers in Austria and Germany are legally required to form an emergency corridor (Rettungsgasse) to allow emergency vehicles through. On a two-lane road, left lane moves left, right lane moves right. On three or more lanes, left lane moves left, all others move right.

How do I contact HighwayInfo Hub?

Use the contact form on our Contact page or email us directly at [email protected]. We aim to respond within two working days. We do not offer telephone support.

Can you help me plan a specific route?

Yes, within scope. We can provide general guidance on major corridors, alpine passes and cross-border routes. For detailed turn-by-turn navigation, we recommend using a dedicated navigation app or service. We can advise on toll costs, seasonal availability and regulatory requirements for your planned route.

What should I do if I break down on an Austrian motorway?

Pull over to the hard shoulder if safe to do so, switch on hazard lights, and place your warning triangle at least 100 m behind the vehicle. Call ÖAMTC on 123 for roadside assistance. For accidents with injuries, call 112. HighwayInfo Hub cannot provide physical roadside assistance.

How current is the information on this site?

We review our content regularly and aim to reflect current regulations and toll charges. However, road rules and fees can change. Always verify critical information — especially toll charges and legal requirements — with official sources such as ASFINAG (Austria) or the relevant German Landesbehörde before travel.

Do you cover roads in other countries?

Our primary coverage is Austria and Germany. We include some information on border crossings and connecting routes in neighbouring countries (Switzerland, Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia) where relevant to cross-border travel, but this is not our core focus.

How do I submit a complaint?

Email [email protected] with the subject 'Complaint' and include your original enquiry details, a description of the issue and your desired outcome. We acknowledge complaints within one working day and aim to resolve them within five working days.
